Dave (Vince Vaughn) and Ronnie (Malin Akerman) are a couple who are going through a stressful period in their marriage, as they are trying to re-decorate their house, manage their sons and sell Dave’s game, Guitar Hero. Joey (Jon Favreau) and Lucy (Kristen Davis), some friends of Ronnie and Dave are also going through a turbulent period in their marriage, with Joey having conflicts with his rebellious teenage daughter over her behaviour and appearance. Another friend, Shane (Faizon Love) has recently divorced and now has a girlfriend, Trudy (Kali Hawk), whom he is trying to impress. One day, at Dave’s son’s birthday party, they are called into a meeting by a fourth friend, Jason (Jason Bateman) and his wife, Cynthia (Kristen Bell) who, following failed attempts to conceive, are close to getting a divorce. They explain that, in an effort to save their marriage, they have booked a vacation to a couples therapy retreat, called Eden. To save money they have booked a package that is much cheaper and encourage their friends to join them. Although they are reluctant to go, as they have already got many issues in their lives, as well as the fact that the island offers couples therapy, they are convinced to go and not do the therapy. Ronnie and Dave’s kids also persuade them, revealing that they are scared of their parents getting a divorce.
